The move has been positively received by Polish society and many of this country's European allies. But much still needs to be done to transform words into deeds and time is moving on.
There remains presently a 900 strong Polish military contingent in Iraq out of peak 3200 troops station[e]d there in 2004. The five year military presence in Iraq has claimed the lives of 22 Polish soldiers. Not much compared to US casualties, but enough to build strong opposition among society and numerous political circles back home. In the election campaign last year the Civic Platform (PO) pledged to cut short the then just extended mandate for Polish troops in Iraq should it emerge victorious and form a new government. In the first weeks in office the cabinet of Donald Tusk had officially announced that autumn 2008 will be the target date for withdrawing Poles from the multinational forces stationed in the south-central region of Iraq.
