John Hawkins: Stop calling Republicans racists!

This post is such a target rich environment, but let's just look at this bit.
The idea that the Republican Party of today is being compared to the Democrats of yesteryear who organized the KKK, encouraged the abortion of black children, and fought to keep black children from going to school has always been ridiculous on its face. Unlike the Democratic Party, the Republican Party was founded on fighting slavery and has nothing in its entire history, from its beginning to the present, to be ashamed of.
This again?

Those "Democrats of yesteryear" Hawkins mentions were Southern conservatives -- and that's the group that dominates today's Republican Party.

Why must they always insist on this little shell game?

Also, what human organization as old as the Republican party have done "nothing in its entire history...to be ashamed of"?

Off the top of my head: Sarah Palin, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Clinton impeachment, torture, Jack Abramoff, Iran-Contra, Watergate, Cambodia, Richard Nixon, McCarthyism, Teapot Dome.

And of course, Lee Atwater.
You start out in 1954 by saying, "Nigger, nigger, nigger." By 1968 you can't say "nigger"—that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites.
And since the former chairman of the GOP apologized for the Southern Strategy, I don't want to hear this is some made-up librul accusation.
