Worn to Perfection.

That was the tagline for Paul Newman's last great movie and performance, in Nobody's Fool. It was apt. After a lifetime's worth of wonderful roles -- Spartacus Butch, Fast Eddie, Luke -- it was hard not to think that his embodiment of the charming, rakish, sweet-natured Mr. Sullivan had perhaps been the goal all along.

It's worth noting that Mr. Newman was not just a marvelous actor but an exemplary human being as well.

That he was both makes this loss doubly painful.
