In the end, whether banning gay marriage is a mainstream conservative position is of no interest to me. And actually, I agree with Mamet that

gays should be allowed to marry, but not to divorce; thus coupling liberty with punishment for their abominable practices.

(FYI, Mamet is a big fat liberal, as you might expect of someone of his intelligence.)
