Lord Weisberg's Lowest Moment.

It sucks to be reminded that Slate could've a) kept Krugman -- assuming Bill Gates would've matched The Times' offer -- but could've b) concurrently jettisoned Jacob Weisberg. In case you need another reason, here's the soon-to-be Slate editor in the L.A. Times on Sept. 22, 2001:

"Bush deserves the benefit of the doubt to an enormous degree," Weisberg said. "He needs to rally the nation. I want to contribute to that effort to the extent that I can." [via Conason]

Charming, Jake. Does this explain the continued existence in Slate's pages of one his early hires, Christopher Hitchens?
