As a Giants fan, I'll be happy when Bonds goes elsewhere. I had hoped after last season he'd sign with another club, and I took no particular joy in him breaking Aaron's record.
But I'm getting quite tired of this bogus meme I keep seeing in the media's coverage of Bonds, that he wasn't much of a home run hitter before he hit 73, that he was a doubles hitter, etc. "His career high as a Pirate was only 34" I keep reading.
Please, this is absurd. Bonds hit 46 homers his first year as a Giant, and he hit 37 in the strike-shortened season in 1994. Roger Maris's previous high before hitting 61 in 1961 was 39.
Before he allegedly juiced up, at age 33, his last five HR totals were 46, 37, 33, 42, and 40. Bonds was a home run hitter, one of the best ever, not a doubles hitter. Enough already.
There's little doubt that an unenhanced Bonds probably would not have broken Aaron's record. But the fact is, Bonds on his own certainly would've hit between 500-600 homers for his career, cementing him as one of the all-time great sluggers.
And with over 500 career stolen bases, making him the first ever 500-500 player, you'd have to say he was one of the best 3 players ever, alongside Mays and Ruth.
What a waste.
