I thought Romney was very effective last night on "60 Minutes." It's true that he's a political opportunist who'll say anything to get elected -- but he says it convincingly.
It's all for naught, though. Romney has squandered the opportunity to be The Change candidate, because he's slavishly adopted the "correct" right-wing positions on everything from gay rights to abortion to stem-cell research to guns. He's weirdly positioning himself like it's 1999.
Ditto McCain.
I think The Change candidate for the Republicans is still Giuliani, who seemed to figure out last week that he shouldn't back down from some of his socially moderate positions. But even Rudy! won't be able to overcome the yoke of Iraq and the inherent brand problems that currently plague the GOP, let alone his own shortcomings as a candidate.
