My, That's a Nice Glass House You've Got

This tirade from Roger Simon...

Who cares what Time Magazine thinks? Does actually anybody read it anymore? Even at the dentist I prefer the guilty pleasure of People. Time is just dead weight. I don't have a clue what they're doing or writing unless I read about it on the Drudge Report - and even then I don't pay much attention. Time Magazine is a weekly news magazine - about as relevant to our lives as a triceratops.

...is a little ridiculous. His critique of Time aside, the notion that our accelerated media cycle has somehow rendered weekly mags irrelevant is stupid. Take, for example, The New Yorker's pieces on Iraq. Is it possible to read them and assert, with a straight face, that Jon Lee Anderson, George Packer, Seymour Hersh and Jane Mayer don't add anything to the discourse?

Need I remind you, Roger, that it was reporters Hersh and Mayer who respectively broke the Abu Ghraib and "extraordinary rendition" stories? (For his part, Packer wrote what just might be the finest story of the last year.) It's evident that Simon reads The New Yorker, at least, since he's spent no less than three posts attacking Hersh, seemingly just to demonstrate that he's familiar with Salinger's Glass Family.

Anyway, give Simon a little credit. PJs' latest offering is another column by Fred Thompson, that manages simultaneously to be "reprinted by permission" and an "exclusive."
